Technology is one of our newest subjects, formed last year from what was previously a combined Sci-Tech class. It's a hands-on, creative subject in its own right — giving students a practical outlet that breaks up a day of pen-and-paper work, while building real, transferable skills.
Students get hands-on experience across a genuinely broad range of practical skills, including:
Our projects are built around upcycling — taking old or unwanted materials and turning them into something new. It's a hands-on way to teach design, planning and craft skills, while giving students a genuine sense of achievement in seeing a finished piece they've made themselves. Recent highlights have included restoring old furniture and turning discarded pots and pans into animal sculptures.
Students who want to take their sewing skills further can work towards an NCFE Textiles qualification, building on the skills developed in regular Technology lessons.
Technology gives students a different way to engage with learning — one built on doing, making and creating rather than sitting and writing. For many students, it's a chance to build confidence and pride in a tangible piece of work, develop patience and problem-solving skills, and discover a practical strength that a traditional lesson might not reveal.
